EDUCATIONAL, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: SUBJECTS OF NEW BOOK A 226-page, well-illustrated book, Indian Communities in Action, by Robert A. Roessel, Jr., Ed.D., and others, and published by the Bureau of Publications, Arizona State University, is just off the press. Funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity, and edited by Broderick H. Johnson of the Bureau, the volume gives in detail the successes and failures of Indian participation in handling educational problems and procedures, as well as many other facets of community activity and development. The first four chapters discuss chiefly educational progress--with heavy emphasis on community involvement--at Round Rock and Low Mountain on the Navaho Reservation, beginning with Dr. Roessel's first teaching assignment in 1953. Chapter 5 describes a highly successful summer work-education program for teen-age girls on the San Carlos Apache reservation in the early 1960s. Chapter 6, about Cañoncito New Mexico, discusses a remarkable community development project conducted by the Navahos "on their own." Chapter 7 gives details of a training program centered at Naschitti and Coyote Canyon, New Mexico; and Chapter 8 covers the first 10 months of unique success in educational progress and community participation at the new Rough Rock Navaho Demonstration School. Queries regarding the book should be directed to Dr. Robert W. Ashe, College of Education, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona 85281. [purchasing information at time of journal] |
