Hamlin Garlands Observations on the American Indians, a collection of essays covering the years 1895 through 1905, has been published by the University of Arizona Press. The writings are based on Garland's extensive travels among the Indian peoples on reservations throughout the West. In one essay Garland wrote: "It is not a question of ceasing to become an Indian. It is a question of ceasing to be a free man, equal to any in privileges in order to become poor cowboys, ranchers eating at the third table of the white man--hired men and renters. So it is that many of them persist in being Indians in rags rather than cowboys in denim." The 192-page work comes in two versions: soft cover, $4.95, and clothbound, $9.95. Available at bookstores or write University of Arizona Press, Box 3398, Tucson, AZ 85722.
The Central Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs has compiled a bibliographical source book for educators. While the intent of the bibliography is to provide a more comprehensive compilation of American Indian materials to serve as a reference for students, teachers, researchers and others, it should be understood that, because no attempt was made to select and evaluate materials included in the document, the reader's own discretion will be the determining factor with regard to the quality and nature of the material.
