TWELFTH ANNUAL INDIAN EDUCATION CONFERENCE:
A LOOK AT INDIAN EDUCATION IN THE 70’S

About 425 persons registered for the Twelfth Annual Indian Education Conference, held March 19-20 in Tempe at Arizona State University.

As registrants automatically received the published Proceedings this month, this report will only outline the Conference’s program.

Theme of the event was "A Look at Indian Education in the 70’s." Dr. Robert A. Roessel Jr., Chancellor of the Navajo Community College, was keynote speaker at the opening session on Friday morning. The Tribal Leader Panel, with representatives from several Arizona tribes, gave reports in the forenoon.

Workshop sessions occupied the rest of conference time: On Friday afternoon, groups gathered to hear Mr. George Scott, Deputy Director, Education, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Washington, D. C. (Topic--"Central Office Policy on Indian Education"), Mr. John Sullivan, Director of the EPDA Career Opportunity Program, ASU, Tempe ("Teacher Aide Programs"), and Mr. John Winchester, Vice-President, National Indian Education Association, Stillwater, Minnesota ("Functions of NIEA").

Speakers at the second group were: Mr. Thomas Mayhew, Coordinator of the Southwest Regional Center for Community School Development, ASU, Tempe ("Indian Community Schools"), Mr. Eugene Sekaquaptewa, Instructor, Center for Indian Education, ASU, Tempe ("College Indian Studies Program"), and Mr. Ray Sorenson, Assistant Director, Education Phoenix Area Office, BIA, Phoenix ("BIA Education Programs").

On Saturday morning, coordinators and topics were: Mr. Gabriel Sharp, graduate student in the Graduate School of Social Service Administration, ASU, Tempe ("Intercollegiate Indian Programs and Clubs"), Mr. Lloyd House, graduate student, College of Education, ASU ("Problems of Urban Indians"), and Mr. Francis McKinley, Director of the National Indian Training and Research Center in Tempe.
